Geocentric Theory
The theory, accepted for centuries, that Earth sits at the center of the universe.
Heliocentric Theory
The theory, proposed by Copernicus, that the Sun, not Earth, is at the center of the solar system.
Scientific Revolution
A period of rapid change in scientific thinking, roughly 1500-1700, based on observation and evidence rather than tradition alone.
Empirical Evidence
Knowledge based on direct observation and experiment, rather than on tradition or authority.

Applying Newton's Laws
Engineers apply Newton's laws of motion every day, more than three centuries after he first described them.
What the Telescope Proved
For over a thousand years, nearly everyone in Europe believed Earth sat still at the center of the universe. A telescope proved them wrong.
Geocentric theory, the belief that Earth sat at the center of the universe, had been accepted for over a thousand years and was supported by the Church. Nicolaus Copernicus proposed heliocentric theory instead, placing the Sun at the center, though he waited until near the end of his life to publish it, fearing backlash.
Galileo Galilei used a telescope to gather direct observational evidence supporting heliocentric theory. The Catholic Church put him on trial for his findings, but his insistence on evidence over tradition became a model for scientific thinking going forward. Francis Bacon helped formalize this approach into the scientific method, built on careful observation and experimentation.
Isaac Newton later described mathematical laws of motion and gravity, showing the universe followed observable, predictable rules rather than mysterious divine whim alone. The Scientific Revolution trained Europeans to trust careful observation and individual reasoning over inherited authority, a habit of mind soon applied to government itself.
