The Maya Civilization
Lesson 4.8 · City-States, Calendars, and the Concept of Zero
Long before the Aztec or Inca Empires rose to power, the Maya built forty rival city-states across Central America, developed one of the most accurate calendar systems in the ancient world, and independently invented the concept of zero.

City-State
An independent, self-governing city and its surrounding territory, the basic political unit of Maya civilization, with as many as forty existing at the height of the Classic period.
Long Count Calendar
A Maya calendar system used to track long spans of time, built from earlier Mesoamerican calendar traditions, possibly including Olmec influence.
Concept of Zero
A mathematical placeholder value developed independently by Maya astronomers and mathematicians, allowing for more advanced calculation and calendar-keeping.
Classic Period
The era of Maya civilization, from roughly 250 to 900 CE, marked by rapid urbanization and the flourishing of dozens of competing city-states.

Forty City-States, One Shared Culture
Maya civilization was never unified under a single empire, yet it produced some of the most advanced science of the ancient Americas.
Maya civilization developed in the tropical lowlands of Central America, influenced beginning in the fourth century CE by the powerful city of Teotihuacán, whose reach extended deep into Maya territory and, according to some evidence, may have even intervened militarily in the powerful Maya city of Tikal. Because the region's tropical soil was not especially fertile, the Maya developed slash-and-burn agricultural techniques to grow enough food to support dense urban populations. By 250 BCE, a handful of powerful Maya city-states had already emerged, each independently governed and often in competition or open conflict with its neighbors.
The era of Maya greatness, known as the Classic period, began around 250 CE and lasted until about 900 CE. During this time, urbanization expanded rapidly, and as many as forty different Maya city-states rose across the region, frequently waging war against one another to weaken rivals and control resources. Despite this political fragmentation, Maya city-states shared a common culture, including sophisticated architecture, a system of writing, advances in medicine, and remarkable astronomical knowledge. The Maya calendar system, likely influenced by earlier Olmec traditions, combined multiple interlocking cycles, including a 260-day ritual calendar and a 365-day solar calendar, and used a Long Count system to track much longer spans of time.
To build such an accurate calendar, Maya mathematicians and astronomers needed a way to represent an empty place value, and they independently developed the concept of zero, one of the most significant mathematical achievements of the ancient world. This concept allowed for far more advanced calculation than would otherwise have been possible. Although a popular 2009 film claimed the Maya calendar predicted the end of the world in 2012, most historians agree this misunderstands the calendar's cyclical structure: the Maya Great Cycle completing in 2012 simply marked the beginning of a new cycle, not an apocalypse. The scientific and mathematical achievements of Maya city-states, developed independently of both Aztec and Inca civilization, stand as one of the strongest pieces of evidence for the sophistication of pre-Columbian America.
