Tools of an Ocean Age

Lesson 4.2 · Technology and Innovation in the Age of Exploration

No single European invention made transatlantic sailing possible. Instead, sailors combined a Chinese compass, a Chinese rudder, an Arab sail, and a Greek instrument refined in the Middle East. The ships that crossed the Atlantic were themselves proof of global exchange before a single voyage began.

Borrowed Technology, New Possibilities

Every tool that carried European ships across the Atlantic was adapted from an idea that began somewhere else.

In the first millennium CE, Arab sailors in the Middle East created the lateen sail, a triangular sail that let ships sail into the wind rather than only with it. European ships already used a square sail, which gave power but little ability to maneuver. When European shipbuilders combined both kinds of sail on a single three-masted ship, they created the caravel, a vessel that could travel confidently in nearly any direction. The sternpost rudder, invented in China in the thirteenth century, gave these ships far more precise steering than the simple steering oars used before.

Direction was the next problem to solve. For centuries, European sailors had navigated by keeping the coastline in sight, never venturing far enough from land to lose their bearings. The ancient Greek astrolabe, an instrument that used the position of the stars to calculate a ship's north-south location, had been preserved and improved by scholars in the Middle East before making its way to European sailors in the fifteenth century. The magnetic compass, guiding Chinese ships since around 1100 CE, arrived in Europe around the same time. Together, these instruments meant sailors no longer had to see land to know where they were.

Technology alone could not fund a voyage. The commercial system that made transatlantic exploration financially possible, called commenda, was first developed by Muslim merchants and adopted by Italian city-states during the Middle Ages. Under this system, wealthy investors funded a merchant's voyage in exchange for a share of any profit, spreading the risk of a dangerous and expensive undertaking across multiple backers. Spain and Portugal's royal courts used similar financial partnerships to fund Columbus, Dias, and da Gama. Every ship that crossed the Atlantic, in other words, was already the product of centuries of exchange between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, before it ever left the harbor.
