Me, My World, and Our Community, with integrated ELA and cross-curricular supports

Grade Level

Kindergarten, Overarching Enduring Understanding

By the end of Kindergarten, students should understand that they are part of several connected communities, including self, family, classroom, school, and neighborhood. They should know that people have roles, places have purposes, rules help communities function, and responsibilities help people care for one another. Students should also recognize that life happens across time, that people grow and change, and that daily routines help organize home and school life.

Students should also understand that social studies at this level is about learning how to live well with others. Through these standards, students begin building the earliest habits of citizenship by showing kindness, listening to others, following rules, helping their community, respecting differences, and recognizing that their choices affect shared spaces and shared experiences.

ELA supports mastery by helping students speak clearly, listen actively, ask and answer questions, describe people and places, identify important details, retell information, use content vocabulary, and communicate understanding through drawing, dictating, and writing. STEM and arts supports help students sort, classify, sequence, build, map, model, compare, and visually represent ideas. Together, these experiences strengthen communication, collaboration, inquiry, creativity, and the foundational habits that support later college and career readiness.
