Before any real structure gets built, someone has to calculate exactly how much material covers its outside, siding, glass, metal, or paint. Today you'll use surface area the way architects and civil engineers do, to estimate material for a real project.

Every material that wraps around a structure, glass, siding, paint, or sheet metal, has a cost per square unit. To know how much material a project needs, architects and engineers rely on the exact same strategy you've been practicing: unfold the structure into a netA two-dimensional pattern that can be folded up to form a three-dimensional figure., find the area of every face, and add.

That total, the surface areaThe total area of all the faces of a three-dimensional figure, found by adding up each face's area., becomes a real number in a real budget. A greenhouse's surface area tells a builder how many square feet of glass to order. A storage tank's surface area tells an engineer how much coating a project needs to protect it from rust.

Get the surface area wrong, and the real consequence is a project that runs out of material mid-build, or one that wastes money on too much. Today, you'll calculate surface area for a real scenario and explain what your total means for the job.
