Architects designing a pyramid-shaped roof or skylight often work backward from the finished 3D shape to a flat net, so a manufacturer knows the exact size and shape of each panel to cut before installation. A wrong net means panels that don't fit.

Civil Engineer

Designing a Sturdy, Efficient Structure

Civil engineers sometimes design support structures shaped like triangular prisms because triangles are strong and stable. Before ordering steel or wood, they sketch a net of the structure to calculate exactly how many flat panels or beams the design will need.

Every box, tent, and pyramid-shaped roof you've ever seen started as a flat netA two-dimensional pattern that can be folded up to form a three-dimensional figure. before it became a three-dimensional object. Designers work backward: they decide on the finished shape, then figure out the flat pattern that will fold into it.

Get the net wrong, and a real project either runs out of material or ends up with panels that don't fit together. Today, you'll design a net for a real scenario, checking your work the way a professional would before sending it off to be built.
