How Your Points Work

This page explains how you earn points, level up your character, unlock badges, and see how your work turns into a score in the gradebook. If you ever think, “Why did I get this score?” — this is where you find the answer.

XP System
Skills & Challenge
Mastery & Badges
Overview The Big Picture

Every assignment you complete earns points. Those points build your character, your badges, and your grade.

Your Main Formula
XP = SP + CP + RP

SP = Skills Points (practice & core skills)

CP = Challenge Points (higher-level thinking & complex tasks)

RP = Reflection Points (explaining your thinking & learning from mistakes)

Each assignment has its own mix of SP, CP, and RP, so you always know what matters most before you start.

Important: The XP you earn is turned into a score in the gradebook. For example; if an assignment is worth 20 XP, your XP is multiplied by 5 and entered on a 100-point scale. (For example, 18 XP = 90% in the gradebook.)
XP Breakdown What Each Point Type Means

Every assignment tells you how many SP, CP, and RP you can earn.

SP = Skills
CP = Challenge
RP = Reflection
SP
Skills Points
Practice & Core Skills

What it is: Points for practicing a specific skill or set of skills.

Examples: Note-taking tasks, vocabulary practice, reading checks, guided questions.

Why it matters: These are the building blocks you need to fully understand the unit.

CP
Challenge Points
Higher-Level Thinking

What it is: Points for more difficult work that asks you to analyze, compare, argue, or create.

Examples: Essay questions, projects, debates, DOK 3–4 tasks, Costa’s Level 2–3 questions.

Why it matters: This shows how deeply you understand the ideas; not just if you remember them.

RP
Reflection Points
Thinking About Your Thinking

What it is: Points for explaining your thinking, reflecting on mistakes, and planning your next steps.

Examples: “What did you learn?” questions, error analysis, self-checks, goal-setting.

Why it matters: Reflection helps you turn confusion into growth and prepares you for mastery.

Example: An assignment might be set up as 20 XP = 15 SP + 5 CP if it focuses on practicing a skill, or 20 XP = 5 SP + 15 CP if it is a challenging assessment or project.

%
XP & Your Grade
How Scores Are Calculated

Every assignment: The XP you earn is multiplied by 5 and entered in the gradebook.

20 XP possible Each XP = 5 points
You earn 18 XP 18 × 5 = 90%
You earn 12 XP 12 × 5 = 60%

XP is not random. Your SP, CP, and RP are clearly shown on the assignment rubric, so you can see how every part of your work counts.

Mastery System Behavior, Teamwork & Badges

XP measures your progress. Mastery Points measure how deeply and consistently you understand and live the work.

BP
Behavior Points
Habits & Choices

What it is: Points for positive classroom behavior and habits.

You earn BP for:

  • Coming prepared and ready to learn
  • Staying on task & using time wisely
  • Asking helpful academic questions
  • Showing perseverance during difficult work

BP can be traded for class rewards and also contributes to Mastery Points when you show strong habits over time.

TP
Teamwork Points
Helping the Community

What it is: Points for treating classmates as teammates, not competitors.

You earn TP for:

  • Explaining ideas clearly to a peer
  • Offering support when someone is stuck
  • Sharing strategies or notes respectfully
  • Being a calm, positive leader in group work

TP shows that you help the whole class grow, not just yourself.

MP

What it is: Special points you earn when you show true mastery of a concept or unit.

MP considers:

  • Your strongest skill work (SP) on mastery tasks
  • Your teamwork (TP) & support of others
  • Your consistent positive behavior (BP) during the unit
MP unlocks Digital Badges

You need enough MP to earn each Digital Badge in the World Builders badge collections.
